Burnout and depression don’t come out of nowhere one day simply due to unforeseen circumstances, life struggles and challenges. They grow in emotional soil often rooted in a feeling of helplessness that is wired into our nervous system as far back as childhood.
As a psychotherapist, I believe that I can’t guide you toward true, deep healing and vitality if I ignore this essential component of healing.
This is why I have struggled so much in finding my sweet spot in what it is I truly want to offer the world. I am passionate about nutrition and healthy eating, and green smoothies. I love teaching about health, wellness and nutrition. I also love burning sage, working with healing crystals, prayer, and spiritual work. And I move my body and exercise pretty near every day of the week.
And I also know that my emotional health is the foundation for all of the other things I do to be whole, healthy, balanced and grounded.
Nutrition, movement, and taking your vitamins and supplements are part of supporting the physical body, but if we ignore some deeper healing work and releasing that needs to be done, these methods will have little result.
Taking medications to “turn off” symptoms of depression, anxiety and help you sleep at night isn’t correcting the real problem. While medications may have a place in acute and severe circumstances for a short duration – I believe they over-prescribed for cases where doing some of this release work would be the thing that shifts one into a higher state of mind and consciousness.
Doing another diet whist not addressing a food addiction, sugar dependency, and emotional eating patterns is another band aid. This is why most diets fail and so many spend their lives on different diet plans that never work over the long term.
This is why my approach to guiding others to health and healing can’t be boxed into a nutrition protocol, or simply telling you that you need to exercise, meditate, and eat more whole foods.
If there is emotional stuff that needs to be worked through, these methods alone aren’t enough.
Many reach burnout and depression and think it just came out of nowhere all of the sudden, when in fact, the ground was being fertilized many years before, and is often rooted in their childhood.
Mixed with circumstances in life, a stressful or abusive relationship, a death in the family, working in a career that is not in alignment with your calling, and not having supportive people in your life is a recipe for illness.
Something that is called “learned helplessness” in psychology is at the root of why many burn out. It is the feeling that the situation is hopeless and that change is improbable. That we don’t have the power to change the situation, so we just give up.
Adrenal Fatigue is rooted in “giving up on the self”, and “no longer caring for the self” as Louise Hay shares in her phenomenal book, You Can Heal Your Life.
It is derived from giving and giving in dead end situations that aren’t improving, no matter how hard you try.
This feeling is often rooted in a childhood event, or caused by a series of contributing factors that leaves one feeling helpless far into adulthood.
There is a connection between childhood trauma (sexual abuse primarily) and Adrenal Burnout and Depression. If your symptoms are related to childhood wounds, you must get support to work through these areas before healing can occur.
There are so many layers for why we develop an illness, but what I do believe is that no matter the illness, the emotional work is essential to begin the healing process.
When I help women who emotional eat, or have an eating disorder, we start working on the emotional healing. Rather than say that I help you lose weight, I help you deal with the real issues, and the weight-loss becomes an effortless side effect.
If you feel that childhood events are affecting your health and well-being, get some specialized support form someone who understands that the physical is connected to the whole.
The timing to reach out for this help has to be right.
What I have witnessed is that those souls that are determined to rise up and do what it takes to overcome their issues, will move mountains to make it happen.
I had a single mother once come in to see me once that prepaid for 5 sessions with a bag of loose change and bills she had accumulated from saving and selling stuff she didn’t need anymore so she could work with me. This really sticks in my memory because it was so inspiring.
I have worked with women in circumstances that could have had all of the valid reasons or excuses for why they couldn’t work with me. Not enough time, not enough money, fear, and they found a way.
This is another topic I will be writing about coming up is how money mindset and healing our money wounds is also a huge factor when it comes to health.
Feeling helpless to change a situation, can also fall into the financial category, and can be a major block in itself to the healing process.
There is always a way through every block.
If you are one of those souls that is ready to shift and breakthrough, you can start the process by applying for a complimentary 30 minute session, and sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all of my blog and podcast updates and more. You can do that HERE.
